Funding opportunity: Women’s Digital Financial Inclusion in Ethiopia

Learn more about an open call for applications for civil society-led projects that advance women’s digital financial inclusion in Ethiopia. The deadline to apply is June 30, 2023.

Note: The grants are administered by Women’s World Banking with UNCDF operating as a technical advisor for grant selection and monitoring and evaluation.

Background

The UN Capital Development Fund (UNCDF) was established in 1966 by the UN General Assembly. It is an autonomous, voluntarily funded UN organization, affiliated with the UN Development Programme. UNCDF has been present in Ethiopia since 1982, executing local development and financial inclusion programmes to provide financial services and endorse economic activities at the local level.

The Women’s Digital Financial Inclusion (WDFI) Global Advocacy Hub was launched in Ethiopia in June 2022 to:

  • Convene diverse stakeholders in Ethiopia to form a Coalition (“WDFI Ethiopia Coalition”) to advance women’s digital and financial inclusion

  • Support the members of this Coalition by facilitating access to trainings and insights, and channeling financial resources to make their ideas a reality

  • Elevate and amplify local voices and opening spaces for young, diverse, up-and-coming individuals to own and share calls to action at global platforms

The WDFI Hub has a grant-making facility to help build advocacy capacity and advance innovative solutions with organizations based in Ethiopia and Indonesia. The facility is administered by Women’s World Banking, with UNCDF operating as a technical advisor for grant selection and monitoring and evaluation.

Grant overview

As a managing partner of the WDFI Global Advocacy Hub, UNCDF is pleased to announce a call for applications for the Ethiopia coalition.

The deadline to apply is June 30, 2023 at 11:59pm (GMT+3). Any application submitted after this date will not be eligible. Selected proposals will be announced in July 2023.

Selection criteria

  • This grant is only open to civil society organizations or NGOs based in Ethiopia.

    • Joint proposals between civil society organizations and private sector or government stakeholders are also eligible as long as the primary implementing organization is a civil society organization or NGO.

  • The grant must be used to support advocacy efforts and/or practical solutions to advance women’s digital financial inclusion in Ethiopia. We’re especially interested in projects aligned with the WDFI Global Advocacy Hub’s priority themes:

    • Access to technology

    • Access to skills

    • Access to digital financial services

    • Collecting sex-disaggregated data

  • The grant must be used within six months of disbursement.

  • All projects need to gather evidence of impact and report within two months of the close of the grant.

  • Your organization does not have to be a member of the coalition to be eligible to receive a grant (although coalition members are encouraged to apply). All organizations that receive the grant will be eligible for coalition membership.
